Domestic Espresso Machines
You're taking the plunge and buying, or have bought, a domestic espresso machine. You've read the video and watched the instructions, and it is not doing quite what you expected. Is it the coffee, the milk, the water, or the settings?. We can help.
We start with explaining what coffee is and how to get the best out of it; talk about flavours and help identify what you looking for; work out all the bits of your machine; get it extracting and show you how to tune it; and get it milking. We'll try different coffees to help you explore your preferences, and then muck around so you can see where you're going.
Bring your machine along. You might be having problems, or seeking the best. If you're about to buy, come along and learn what counts and what you can expect. And bring you grinder; it is a key to success.
You'll need to pre-book these 3 hour courses in advance. Our small groups (of two to five only) provide the best atmosphere. These courses are run in conjunction with our Appreciation Courses (above). Understanding coffee is the first key to making your machine sing. Our next dates are: June 21st and 28th, July 12th and 26th, August 9th and 23rd

Climbing the Mountain
Barista training for the professional Nationally accredited training and trainers Through each of these four sessions, the student builds their knowledge and skill, advancing towards professional recognition as a barista.
Rob Forsyth, proprietor of Forsyth Coffee & Tea, is proud to announce his much needed course for Barista Training. This is a full training course consisting of four, 3-hour sessions covering all aspects of coffee preparation, as well as practical hands on experience in espresso making. At the conclusion, opportunities for real word cafe expreience can be arranged if required.
The course is designed to be both informative and enjoyable.
Session 1 – UNDERSTANDING COFFEE This session covers the origins of coffee, an understanding of blending, and an appreciation of flavours, aromas, coffee complexity and balance. These are of critical importance to the training barista in being able to discuss coffee with customers, be able to properly diagnose coffee errors, and chose and blend preferred coffees.
Session 2 – EXTRACTING THE MAGIC This session explains the coffee making basics of temperature, dose, grinding, tamping, and of course, the different styles of presenting the espresso, including the Ristretto and the Espresso Lungo. We walk the grind to ensure the training barista understands how to properly manage the grinder. It's hands on, as we work from flawed to excellent espresso, developing taste and diagnostic skills as we go.
Session 3 – TEXTURING THE MILK This session is about the all-important milk texturing, and using it for coffee art. Participants will be shown the correct methods of making all the most requested coffees served with milk, Cappuccino, Café Latte, Macchiato and other specialties. Again it's hand-on, building from good extraction into finely textured milk.
Session 4 – ORDERS, PRACTICE & ASSESSMENT This session is about bringing all the elements together, practicing the different coffee styles, refining coffee diagnostics, and being able to prepare real-world orders. It concludes with an assessment task, to confirm an appropriate level of competence. Additional certification against national competency standard can be arranged.
We work to iron out any problems and bad habits.
AQTF Accredited Espresso Training provided by accredited trainers. For the those looking for an enjoyable career, or the coffee lover. Come, share our passion, and gain a nationally recognised qualification.
